Public Gardens Listing: Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden (Arcadia, CA)

LA County Arboretum and Botanic Garden

While balcony container gardeners enjoy their small-space urban gardens, sometimes a few container plants on an apartment balcony above a busy street just isn’t peaceful enough. Balcony gardeners might not be able to have a peaceful, large garden, but there are public gardens and arboretums near every major city. Don’t just fawn over pictures of luxurious gardens, get out there and enjoy a day at a public garden! You may even bring some gardening inspiration home to your own balcony container garden.

If you live in or are visiting the Los Angeles (Arcadia) area, why not visit the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden?

  • The 127-acre arboretum has five botanical sections: Africa, Australia, The Americas, The Asiatic and the Historic Circle.
  • There are more than 18,000 plants at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. The garden also has two natural sag ponds, which are bodies of water that forms when the ground surface falls below the water table in a strike-slip fault.
  • The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden is home to many gardens, including the Aquatic Garden, Garden for All Seasons, Prehistoric and Jungle Garden, Herb Garden and more.
  • More than 200 peacocks live at the arboretum, and these wild birds can even be found in the neighborhoods nearby.
  • Make sure to take a 30-minute tram tour if you’re visiting on Saturday or Sunday. Tram tours are $4 per person and are scheduled each hour on the hour from 12pm-3pm. You can also take a docent-led walking tour or take a self-guided walking tour.
