Gardener's Dictionary: Container recipe

Container recipe (n.): A recommended arrangement of different plants that will grow well together in the same container (see a Christmas container planting recipe). Plants in container garden recipes must have the same potting soil and water requirements, and sometimes the same light requirements (an exception may be recommending a shade-loving plant planted underneath a taller plant). Successful container recipes often include one tall, thin container plant; one shorter, bushier filler container plant; and one cascading plant that grows out and over the edges of a plant container. Flower and leaf colors, and variegation patterns also come into play when designing a container recipe.
