Gardener's Dictionary: Japanese garden

Japanese garden (n.): A traditional garden in the Japanese style that is a stylized re-creation of a natural landscape. The elements of a Japanese gardens include a Zen gardens, tea houses, bridges, stone lanterns, gates and fences, trees and flowers, paths and fish ponds. While Japanese gardens were originally modeled after Chinese gardens, they have evolved to be quite distinct from one another.
