Some plants that may grow too big for your balcony container garden may do well when grown as bonsai. Bonsai is a very complicated growing technique that consists of trimming, pruning, clamping and much more, in order to grow plants to look like tiny trees. But if you're up to learning more about bonsai and have the patience and skill for it, you can grow plants like bougainvillea or azaleas as bonsai, which look absolutely beautiful – like tiny flowering trees! Once you perfect your bonsai technique with your bougainvillea or azalea bush, you may want to branch out (pun intended) to full-on trees, such as juniper, cypress, spruce – or even small forests of trees!

Plant Tip: Increase Your Yield with Help from Pollinators

Some plants can pollinate their flowers by using wind to carry their pollen to other flowers, but insects and other pollinating animals are usually needed for pollination. Showy and sweet-smelling flowers lure in insects, which transfer the pollen from flower to flower as they eat nectar. Pollinators help increase fruit and vegetable yields, and often result in better crops, so attract them to your garden to increase your plant yields. Plant big, showy flowers next to your vegetable plants to attract pollinators, which will also assist in pollinating your vegetable flowers. Some flower-veggie combo plantings are also beneficial in other ways. Planting marigold flowers next to tomatoes, for example, will also keep bad insects like tomato hornworm caterpillars at bay (due to the marigold's smell).
