Plant Tip: Have Patience with Kaffir Lilies

To get the kaffir lily (also called bush lily or Clivia lily) to flower, first you need to wait until it is several years old and has more than 12 leaves. After one month of cool nighttime temperatures, water the kaffir lily lightly and very sparingly. Fertilize well with a high-potassium plant fertilizer before spring, and it should bloom in the springtime with gorgeous clumps of colorful orange flowers. Once the flowers are spent, cut off the entire flower stalk so that the plant does not produce berries. Producing berries may prevent it from flowering in the next season.
